Introducing Horizon Hills Golf & Country Club
Our new reciprocal in Malaysia
Dear Members,
We are delighted to inform you that we have signed a new reciprocal arrangement with an exciting new club in Malaysia ---Horizon Hills Golf & Country Club.
Within such a short time since our opening in 2008, Horizon Hills Golf & Country Club has become a household name in the golf industry in this region. Horizon Hills is a breath-taking, challenging piece of art within a 1,200-acre freehold township development in the heart of Nusajaya which itself is a key flagship zone within the Iskandar Development Region.
Located in the southern state of Johor, Horizon Hills is one of the top golf clubs in Malaysia and was the venue for three editions of the Iskandar Johor Open from 2010 to 2012, won by Ireland’s Padraig Harrington, Dutchman Joost Luiten and Spaniard Sergio Garcia respectively. Owned and operated by leading property developer Gamuda Land, Horizon Hills offers a stunning 18-hole course crafted by Ross Watson and one of the best clubhouses in the country.
Unlike many courses, the opening hole at Horizon Hills is anything but easy. The tee shot is played blind onto a wide-looking elevated landing area heavily guarded on the left by fairway bunkers. This is one of several holes at Horizon Hills where the green is not visible from the tee. The biggest obstacle is the fairway bunkers and mounds that actually sit on a straight path towards the green. Big hitters should be able to carry the bunkers but for the first-timer, playing to the right is the safer route. The green is slightly elevated and well guarded with bunkers on both sides. The surface is well contoured and as is the case with most of the greens here, full concentration is needed to avoid three putts or more.
This has got to be one of Watson’s finer creations. From the elevated teebox, the golfer will spend a little more time taking in the dramatic view down towards a fairway that doglegs right with water lurking all the way past a relatively small green. A typical risk-reward hole, long hitters will attempt to cut as much of the hazard in order to afford a wedge onto a green that is not too receptive to long irons. Pot bunkers on three sides of the green make this hole that much tougher, belying its high index of 17. This is one of Horizon Hill’s signature holes.
This Par Five boasts of possibly the only hole in the region with an island fairway that sits on the lake alongside the main fairway. The tee shot has to be very accurate instead of long, if playing this as a three-shot Par Five as water guards the right all the way to the green. The long hitter who opts to attack the island fairway will be rewarded with a long iron or rescue wood second shot to the green. But again, it is another full carry over water. This is a typical risk-reward hole, a feature that Watson understands only too well and subscribes with relish. The 18th here is well justified as Horizon Hill’s finish to a golfing adventure.
Horizon Hills Golf & Country Club is only 30 minutes from Senai International Airport.
