INTERNATIONAL TOURNAMENTS

In 2007, the Omega Mission Hills World Cup began a new and exciting era in the history of the event, when Mission Hills China secured an unprecedented agreement to host 12 editions of the tournament.

The World Cup represents the highest level of team competition in golf, earning its nickname as the “Olympics of Golf”. It is a four-day team event featuring a four-ball (better-ball) format on days one and three, and a foursomes (alternate shot) format on days two and four.

John Jay Hopkins, a noted Canadian industrialist, started the World Cup of Golf in 1953 as a way to promote goodwill among nations through golf. Initially named the Canada Cup, it became the World Cup in 1967 and has been contested on revered golf courses around the world.

In 2008, teams from 28 nations participated in the 54th edition of the World Cup, including nine past Ryder Cup participants and five former PGA Tour winners. The 2008 victors - Robert Karlsson and HenrikStenson of Team Sweden - join the ranks of some of the world’s greatest players who have won the event, including Ben Hogan, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Seve Ballesteros, Nick Faldo and Tiger Woods.
